Terms

Yours to use, free.

Captain Kill Switch is free software you may use at home and at work without paying anything. These are the terms that come with it — short, and in plain English.

Effective September 1, 2026

Free, permanently

Use it at home and at work, on as many machines as you like, for as long as you like. No fee, no account, no trial that expires.

It updates itself

The app checks for new versions and installs them, so you stay on a supported build without doing anything.

Provided as-is

It closes your applications on request. It is careful, but it is free software with no warranty — save your work first.

Your licence

You are granted a free, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to install and use Captain Kill Switch, for personal or commercial purposes, on as many devices as you like, for as long as you like. There is no fee, no subscription, no trial period, and no account to create.

You may share the app by pointing people at the official download page or the package managers it is published through.

What the licence does not cover

The app is provided as a compiled program, not as source code. The licence does not include the right to sell it, to redistribute modified copies, to repackage it under another name, or to reverse-engineer it except where the law expressly permits that regardless of what these terms say.

The name Captain Kill Switch, the logo, and the site's content remain ours. Using the app does not transfer any of that to you.

What the app does, and your responsibility

Captain Kill Switch closes running applications when you tell it to. It asks each application to close normally first, waits briefly, and only then forces the ones that ignored the request. It deliberately leaves your desktop session and core system services alone.

An application that is asked to close may discard work you have not saved. That is the nature of the tool, and it is why we say it plainly here: save your work before you use it. You are responsible for choosing when to trigger it and on which machine.

Updates

The app checks for new versions at launch and on demand, and installs them so you stay on a supported build. Updates are delivered from our own download host and are cryptographically signed; the app verifies that signature before installing anything. See the privacy page for what an update check discloses.

No warranty

The app is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not promise it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or compatible with every application you run.

Nothing here excludes or limits any right you have under consumer law that cannot be excluded or limited by agreement — in Australia, that includes the guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law. Where such a guarantee applies and we are permitted to limit our liability for breaching it, our liability is limited to supplying the app again.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for lost data, lost profits or lost revenue, arising from your use of or inability to use the app — including work lost because an application was closed.

Privacy

The app sends anonymous usage statistics and crash reports, and nothing personal. What is collected and why is set out in full on the privacy page, which forms part of these terms.

Third-party components

The app is built with open-source libraries, each under its own licence. Those licences govern those components; these terms govern Captain Kill Switch as a whole.

Ending the licence

You may stop using the app and uninstall it at any time — that ends the licence. We may end it if you use the app in a way these terms do not permit, such as redistributing modified copies.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the product changes. The effective date at the top shows when they last changed, and continuing to use the app after that means the updated terms apply. We will not retroactively start charging for a version you already have.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia. If you live somewhere else, you keep the benefit of any mandatory consumer protections your local law gives you.
