A computer that felt fast this morning and sluggish by 4pm usually isn’t broken — it’s carrying twenty programs you stopped thinking about. Here’s what open apps actually cost, how to see it, and the honest version of what closing them fixes (and doesn’t).
What open programs really cost
- Memory. Every open app holds working memory; browsers hold it per tab. When RAM runs out, the OS swaps to disk and everything gets slower — the classic 4pm feeling.
- CPU in the background.“Idle” apps aren’t idle: syncing, indexing, checking feeds, animating badges. Ten of those add up, especially on laptops.
- Battery. Background wake-ups are the top real-world battery drain after the screen.
- Your attention.Every window in Alt-Tab/Cmd-Tab is a thing your brain tracks. This one isn’t measurable in Task Manager, but it’s why a clean desktop feels faster than the benchmark says.

Windows: Ctrl+Shift+Esc → sort Processes by Memory or CPU. Mac:Activity Monitor (Spotlight → “Activity Monitor”) → Memory tab, check “Memory Pressure” at the bottom — yellow or red means open apps are actively costing you.
The honest fix hierarchy
- Close what you’re not using. Biggest effect, zero risk, free.
- Restart the browser — tabs are the usual RAM culprit.
- Reboot when memory pressure stays red — clears leaks closing can’t.
- Not the fix:“RAM cleaner” utilities. Modern OSes manage memory well; the real lever is simply having fewer programs open.
